Bryan Cantley is the owner of Form:uLA Dimension Laboratories in the Los Angeles area, and a tenured Professor of Design Theory at CSUF. His work explores the area between architecture and its media- using the drawing as a site for extreme speculation. Form:uLA’s projects also look at the ethics of media + technology within the discipline, and the residual constructs that express their spatial, political + social implications. The studio explores these CONditions through the language of the machine, using the vehicle of the synthetic CONstruct as a means for discussing unorthodox architectures.
His work is in the Permanent Collection of SFMOMA and is in the private collection of Thom Mayne. He has lectured extensively about his work, and has had solo exhibitions at SCIarc, the Bartlett, UCLA and UNCC. His work has been included in many international publications, including AD/Drawing Architecture, JAE The Magic of Architectural Drawing, UCL Press Drawing Futures, Blistering Romance: Surrealist Architecture Then and Now, Single Handedly, Design Ecologies no. 7 , and Surrealism in Architecture.
Cantley’s first monograph, Mechudzu was published in 2011 by the Research Institute of Experimental Architecture [RIEA], and he is working on two follow up books with editor Peter Baldwin: Speculative Coolness [an experimental project based publication] and PixelSmear [an extensive plunge into his experimental/speculative drawings]. Both books include an international list of authors exploring his work, including essays by Perry Kulper, Wes Jones, Dora Jones, and Robert MacLeod and forewords by Neil Spiller and Thom Mayne.
Cantley lives in SoCal with his wife Kim and their rescue dog Stella.
